Bacopa monnieri is a small creeping herb with fleshy leaves and white flowers that grows in wetlands and marshes across India, South-East Asia and other warm regions. In India it is known as brahmi, a name linked to Brahman, reflecting its long association with the mind.
It has been used in Ayurveda for centuries, where it is traditionally used to support memory and learning. Its compounds of interest are bacosides, a group of saponins. Researchers have studied standardised bacopa extracts in a number of trials lasting at least 12 weeks, and a meta-analysis found some improvements on certain memory and attention tests, but it has no authorised health claim.
On labels you will see bacopa, Bacopa monnieri herb extract, brahmi or branded extracts, often standardised to a percentage of bacosides. Effects in studies appeared over weeks rather than days, so research has focused on regular daily use. Taking it with food may help reduce stomach upset.
