About

What is shilajit?

Shilajit is a sticky, tar-like resin that seeps from rock in high mountain ranges, especially the Himalayas and Altai. It forms over very long periods as plant material breaks down and is pressed between layers of rock. In Ayurveda it is classed as a rasayana, a rejuvenating substance, and is traditionally used to support vitality and energy.

Its make-up varies from region to region. Reviews describe it as rich in humic substances, especially fulvic acid, along with minerals, small amounts of amino acids and compounds called dibenzo-alpha-pyrones. Researchers have studied purified shilajit in small trials, including one in healthy middle-aged men, but the evidence base is still small and it has no authorised health claim.

Raw shilajit must be purified before use, as unprocessed material can contain heavy metals and other contaminants. On labels you will see shilajit, purified shilajit, shilajit resin or extract, sometimes with a fulvic acid percentage. Capsules, powders and resin pots are all common.

RCT2022

A shilajit extract preserved bone density and lowered markers of bone turnover, oxidative stress and inflammation in postmenopausal women with osteopenia.

A 48-week double-blind trial randomised 60 postmenopausal women with osteopenia to placebo, 250 mg or 500 mg shilajit extract daily. Spine and hip bone density fell on placebo but was dose-dependently preserved with shilajit.

RCT2016

Purified shilajit raised total and free testosterone compared with placebo in healthy men aged 45 to 55.

A double-blind trial gave healthy men aged 45 to 55 purified shilajit 250 mg twice daily or placebo for 90 days. Total testosterone, free testosterone and DHEAS rose significantly compared with placebo.

RCT2019

Shilajit at 500 mg a day helped active men retain muscle strength after a fatiguing exercise test.

A randomised trial gave 63 recreationally active men 250 mg or 500 mg shilajit or placebo daily for eight weeks. In the stronger half of participants, the 500 mg group lost less strength after fatiguing exercise and had lower hydroxyproline.

What is shilajit made of?

Shilajit is a mineral-rich resin formed over long periods from decomposed plant matter in mountain rock. It is rich in fulvic acid and other humic substances, plus minerals and small amounts of other compounds. Its exact composition varies with where it comes from.

Why does shilajit need to be purified?

Raw shilajit can contain contaminants, and studies have found toxic metals such as lead, arsenic and mercury in some samples. Purification and independent testing reduce this risk, so choose products that state they are purified and tested for heavy metals.

How much shilajit do studies use?

Small human trials have used 250 mg of purified shilajit twice a day, for periods from eight weeks to 90 days. These findings apply to the specific purified products tested, so follow the label of the product you choose.
