About

What is batana oil?

Batana oil comes from the nut of the American oil palm (Elaeis oleifera), a relative of the African oil palm that grows wild in the rainforests and wetlands of Central and South America. It is most closely linked with the Miskito people of the La Mosquitia region of Honduras, who have used it for generations to care for their hair and skin.

Traditional production is slow, careful work. The fruit is boiled and pounded to remove the orange outer shell, the nuts are sun-dried and cracked with a stone, and the kernels are cooked over a fire until the oil is released. As it cools, the oil sets into a thick paste. Batana oil is traditionally used to nourish hair and scalp, and on ingredient lists you will see it as Elaeis oleifera kernel oil.

The oil is rich in fatty acids, mainly oleic and linoleic acid, along with tocopherols and tocotrienols (forms of vitamin E), carotenoids and plant sterols. These give it a conditioning, protective feel on the hair shaft. Despite its popularity online, there are no clinical trials on batana oil and hair growth, so its benefits are best described as conditioning and cosmetic.

Warm a small amount between your palms and work it through the lengths of your hair and onto the scalp, then leave it as a mask before washing out. It is thick, so a little goes a long way. Patch test first.
