Cochrane review of 47 RCTs (5,290 women), 17 on minoxidil. Minoxidil roughly doubled the chance of moderate to marked regrowth and added about 13 hairs/cm² versus placebo.
Double-blind multicentre trial in 393 men aged 18–49 applying solution twice daily for 48 weeks. 5% minoxidil gave 45% more regrowth than 2% and worked faster; it was well tolerated, with more scalp itching than 2%.
Pilot study in 30 adults with patchy alopecia areata; two patches per person were randomly assigned to bimatoprost 0.03% twice daily or mometasone 0.1% cream for 3 months. Bimatoprost patches responded faster with more regrowth and fewer side effects.
